Interesting news item about Walmart selling caskets online . According to the article, it looks like the caskets they are selling are cheaper that what you’d normally find if you went elsewhere. Do you think this is a good idea, or something Walmart should stay away from?

I saw that same article. I know Costco also sells caskets through its website. I guess it’s a good idea since people can educate themselves about their options from the comfort of home. I haven’t had to buy a casket myself, but it seems like a lot of pressure and a high cost investment to make a decision so quickly at a funeral home right after a loved one dies. So this alleviates some of that stress.

But, wouldn’t you want to see it in person and feel the fabric and things like that before buying one?

You raise a good point Holly- about seeing the casket and all, but when I think about that whole process, it’s actually a bit chilling! I really don’t want to choose my own casket. I know it’s necessary, but it’s super creepy. I think I’ll just leave it up to my family to choose one- it sounds bad, but I’m kind of glad that I won’t be there to see it :-)

I think it’s good that they are selling it since it’s supposed to be cheaper, what with the economy and all. Hopefully it will help folks out a bit.

Hi. I recently attended a funeral director’s convention and there were many exhibitors there selling caskets. Thankfully, I have never had to personally purchase one but I know they are expensive depending on the type you like. These caskets were amazing in structure and how they were built. I couldn’t help but think wow, it really looks nice but its going to be buried anyways! Thousands of dollars for a caskets to house a loved one.

Not everyone has that kind of money to buy caskets in that price range. The funeral costs are high enough. I applaud Walmart and Costco for selling affordable caskets that families can purchase and dispose of their loved one’s body in honor. We need a resource that offers this otherwise more and more bodies will continue to be unclaimed due to the lack of funds families have to do a decent burial.

Hi Carole,

We definitely need more affordable resources when it comes to caskets, and the like. I mean, it’s getting to the point where people can’t even afford to die- it’s crazy. You’re right too about some of the caskets being beautiful and it is a shame to thing that they’ll just be put in the ground. I think I’ll just take something simple exactly for that reason; do you know what kind of casket you want? I mean, it sounds morbid, but are you going to choose an ornate one or something “regular”?
