I remembered this the other day .. We had a few dogs over the years while growing up and I remember my dad nailing the dog’s license tag to a post in the basement after each dog passed on. This went on from the time I was little until he died in 2001. My mom has since sold the house, but I need to ask her what she did with those dog tags….I wonder if she left them there.

That was very sweet of your father Mary Beth. If you can get a hold of them (from your mother) what do you think you’ll do with them? I hope that she kept them (but selling a house can be a bit stressful, so she may have forgotten). What made you think of those tags now? Did you see something?

I can understand why he did that- I have two pets, and would be devastated if anything were to happen to them.

That is a really nice way to remember them. Back when your dad was doing that, there weren’t a lot of options about how to memoralize a pet. My mom has had her two most recent pets cremated, but she just mentioned the other day that she wish she had been able to do that with the pets we had even earlier. Back then, all you did was take them to the vet and they took care of whatever happened.

Wow, that’s just awful. Thank goodness things have changed a bit since then.  That must have been really hard on your mom. I can’t imagine, but I guess that’s just the way it was.

It’s really hard when I pet goes. I was just thinking about this the other day (I had to take my dog to the vet), so it got me thinking. I have an older one (she’s eight), so I’ve been wondering what we are going to do. Hopefully, she’ll be around for a long time, but I know that it’s still something we have to think of.

We hang our dogs tags on our Christmas tree each year as an ornament. It helps them to be a part of our special family time through this memorial. And it touches our heart to hang them on the tree each year and remember their lives with us.

That’s a wonderful and creative idea Debbie. I hadn’t thought about it, so thanks for mentioning it. I think that’s a unique and special way to remember a pet. Plus, it might also be very soothing for little kids who’ve lost a pet- this way they can take part in remebering them. Plus since Christmas comes every year, it’s along the lines of “gone, but not forgotten”. Thanks for sharing that!

Does anyone else do anything simliar to that?
