Plastic Pet Caskets

From LoveToKnow Dying

Plastic pet caskets are economical and sometimes ecological alternatives to traditional burial containers for your favorite animals that have passed away. But don't let the word "plastic" fool you -- they can be just as beautiful, secure and strong as traditional wooden or metal caskets, and obviously much nicer than burying your pet in an old shoe box!

About Plastic Pet Caskets

Plastic caskets for pets come in a variety of sizes, styles, colors and shapes. Most are constructed from strong, high-impact plastics including polyurethane and polystyrene and serve as a vault as well as a coffin. It is designed with a special sealant to restrict seepage of air and water. Their main colors are white, grey or brown (wood color) and can be lined with:

  • Crepe
  • Satin
  • Lace
  • Silk
  • Cotton
  • Velvet
  • Flannel

Some plastic pet caskets are biodegradable, made from materials such as hemp oil, soy bean oil and corn starch, or from other microbial sources. These eco-friendly coffins will, in time, return to the soil as they do not have any wooden or metal components. Many have thick, double walls and can serve as both a casket and a vault. A cement vault is not used with a non-biodegradable plastic pet coffin. If you do choose one, a natural fiber shroud can be used made from:

  • Pressed flowers or leaves
  • Hand-woven silk
  • Bamboo
  • Stalk fibers
  • Flax
  • Unbleached cotton
  • Seed casings
  • Fruit fibers
  • Vegetable fibers

Where to Find Plastic Pet Caskets

There are two ways to go about looking for a plastic casket for your deceased pet.

Locally

There are a few places you can check before looking online for a pet casket:

  • Veterinarian's office
  • Local pet cemetery
  • Pet supply store
  • Casket store (check your phone book for locations)
  • Funeral home

Once you locate a company that will help you pick out your casket, make sure you inquire about information about making all of the burial arrangements such as where your pet can be buried, purchasing a headstone and if applicable, a funeral.

Online

If you live in an area where you are unable to find help with a plastic pet casket, then looking on the Internet will be your best option. Many companies offer a variety of coffins available for your pet. They include:

  • Plastic Pet Caskets offers an array of specialty pet caskets made of a high-impact styrene. They come in 14 colors and at least five sizes, depending on the size of your pet. The company is located in Houston, Texas.
  • The Pet Casket Shop ships all of its caskets through the U.S. Post Office's Priority Mail service. Its caskets come in two sizes: One for animals up to 10 pounds and the other for pets up to 25 pounds. Prices start at $49.95 (plus shipping and handling). Biodegradable plastic caskets are also available.
  • Forever at Peace offers five different plastic caskets for pets and will ship them to your door. They are white and come with a black sealing strip and inner polyethylene bag.
  • Urns on Sale sells a few styles of pet caskets. They come in eight sizes and 21 styles. The caskets are shipped by UPS Ground Service, but upgrades are available

A Final Note: How to Bury Your Pet

If you are choosing to bury your own pet in your yard or on another piece of land (make sure you check for local rules and regulations regarding this), here are a few things to do to make sure you inter your animal properly without damaging the casket:

  • The plot should be two inches bigger than the casket size.
  • Remove the sod and dig a hole about three feet deep; this will keep other animals from trying to dig up the casket.
  • Make about a one-inch bed of loose soil at the bottom of the hole, making sure it's even with no clumps.
  • Lower the casket and gently add soil around and on top of the coffin, patting it down as you go along.
  • When you get to about two inches below the seal line, add about two inches of water and allow it to drain.
  • Add remaining soil and replace sod, which should sit about an inch higher than the ground surrounding it. This will settle over time.
