What to Include
When you are the one writing an obituary, you will need to spend some time gathering the needed information on the deceased. You want to produce a short biography to let others know about the person who has died. Be sure to keep the following in mind and plan to include:
- Date of death
- Place of death and cause (optional)
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Where deceased was living, but you do not need to put the actual street address
- Employment or occupation
- Military involvement
- Marriage and children
- Accomplishments
- Awards or certificates
- Hobbies or interests
- Religious affiliation
- Survivors, or next of kin
- Date, time and location of memorial service

Optional
Some like to include a poem in the obit. There is an assortment of poetry which is free for public use. Along with making sure that the poem is appropriate for the obit, you will need to make sure that you give proper credit to the author of the poem.
Photo Inclusion
At times, a photo of the deceased is included as part of the death notice. As you study the free memorial obituary template you plan to use, you will be advised as to where the photo should be placed.
Keep in Mind
As with anything you find to include in the obit, it is good practice to have at least one other family member read what you plan to use. You do not want there to be any bad feelings about something you felt was fine to place in the obit, only to learn that the information was not correct or accurate. The death of a loved one is not the time for feelings to be hurt. Try to avoid any disagreements at all costs.
